William Jones in the service of government charged with robbing a fellow prisoner. John Fewins states....The prisoner was standing at the door of the prisoners barracks. He offered me a hat for three shillings. I offered half a crown, I got the hat and was about to pay the money when Jones snatched it out of my hands and ran away and then....took the hat from me. I pursued Jones and called out stop thief. I followed him at a distance to the lumber yard where I saw him taken into custody. Two dumps was the money he took from me. The Chief Constable states - I heard a cry of stop thief and saw Jones running. I pursued him and overtook him inside the lumber yard gate, just as I overtook him I saw him throw something away; when Fewins came up he told me he had been robbed of two dumps. I looked in the direction in which i had seen Jones throw something from his hand and found two dumps which I have no doubt was what he had thrown away. Jones denied the charge. Sentenced to 50 lashes and 14 days in the gaol gang
